Ever since launching Byredo in 2006 – an innovative and now iconic perfume line – Gorham has managed to make us rethink what a luxury product is, challenging the corporations and their monopolies as well as preconceived ideas around the use of perfume.

When the former basketball player launched his fragrance brand, Byredo, in 2006, and decided that he didn’t want to fit into the traditional parameters of the beauty industry, Gorham—and subsequently, his collection of scents —went from outsider to celebrated anomaly almost overnight. In an illuminating interview, Ben Gorham of Byredo shares rare insights into his past, argues for the inclusivity of his brand, and spills the details on some of his forthcoming projects with Savoir Flair’s Editor-in-Chief, Haleh Nia. I spent a good portion of the time in Toronto, Canada.

By following it, he’s expanded his fragrance brand Byredo into a global empire with a new store in Manhattan and a lucrative line of luxury goods. But Gorham was once an outsider in the world of beauty.

I think when I first started Byredo, it was a bit of a shock for my mom and dad—especially my dad. Dropping out of school first to play pro-ball, and then doing fragrance.
